This is a work contract for Ben Remigio Bernal. We can see that this is dated back to March 19, 1943, which means he was sent to work at the very beginning of the Bracero Program. If we read through the contract, we can see that there is a list of rights that workers had. Number 19 was, “The worker shall enjoy, as regards occupational diseases and accidents, the same guarantees enjoyed by other agricultural workers under the laws of the United States of America”, although this is written on the contract, many times they weren’t implemented.
In this contract we can also see that the workers had to include their economic dependents, this could be seen as a way to determine how the workers money would be used or if anything were to happen to the worker while on the job, the dependents would receive some kind of financial relief.
